Sometimes the punishment turns out to be much worse than the crime, especially if it’s meted out by a mob of angry members of the public.

A mob of slum-dwellers gouged out the eyes of two thieves and lynched them for shooting dead a man who tried to stop them from robbing a bike in Ranchi at the weekend, said police on Monday.

According to the police, the men waylaid two students returning home late Sunday evening after extra classes. As one of the robbers pointed a gun at them to threaten them off the bike, the students shouted for help. On hearing the cry, 55-yearold Khudiya Oraon from Tonko Basti tried to block the two from fleeing. The man with the gun shot Oraon in the chest and escaped into the paddy field surrounding the slum.

But the slum-dwellers hunted for the two in the fields, dragged them out, cut their eyes out and clubbed them to death. City Superintendent of Police (SP) Jaya Roy said, “Oraon was the first to respond, and got shot. He was declared dead by doctors at the Ranchi Sadar Hospital.”

Oraon leaves behind six children and his wife. Ranchi police have filed cases against unknown people of the slum for lynching the two. It is the second case of mob justice in a month in Ranchi.

On September 7, a mentally ill man dressed in saree was brutally beaten up by villagers in Sidrol’s Tangartoli, mistaking him for a ‘ghost’.
