A 22-year-old man was sent to Birsa Munda Central Jail on Sunday for allegedly raping his girlfriend, filming the act and sharing the videos with friends through Android messaging application WhatsApp.
The 21-year-old victim lodged a first information report (FIR) against the accused, Vinit Baxla, on Saturday evening accusing him of rape and character assassination, said PN Singh, officer in-charge, Bariatu police station.
“He has been accused of rape, filming obscenity and assassination of a woman’s character. We arrested him on Saturday late evening and sent him to judicial custody today (Sunday),” Singh added.
The complainant and Baxla were in a relationship for the past two years and had almost parted ways after the accused refused to marry her, sources said.
Baxla is a resident of Dumri village in Gumla, 90km from Ranchi, and studied at an ITI centre in the state capital. The complainant too is a resident of Gumla. They had met at a local cloth store and started dating each other after a short stint of friendship, the sources claimed.
The complainant told the police that Baxla had initially assured her that he would marry her and forced her into physical relationship. Baxla made an obscene video of her without her knowledge so that he could use it to blackmail her, she told the police.
According to the state police records, 526 rape cases have been reported in Jharkhand from January to May 2015.
