HT Impact: RMC holds sanitation drive at Kokar area

The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) finally woke up from slumber on Friday to start a special sanitation drive at ward number 10 (Kokar).

This particular area had been facing a hell-like situation since the last few days with garbage containers overflowing and sewage spilling over on the streets.

However, on Friday, RMC's cleanliness drive was restricted in limited areas in the state capital.

Major parts of the city are still struggling with piles of garbage.

Civic body officials claimed that the situation would be brought under control within a day or two.

Ward councillors also promised to cooperate with RMC officials in maintaining cleanliness on the city streets during polls.

Hindustan Times carried a detailed report on the dismal situation of sanitation in the state capital in its Friday's edition headlined 'Councillors busy campaigning, Ranchi civic concerns suffer'.

RMC CEO Manoj Kumar said the quantity of garbage has increased in the state capital due to several reasons like the ongoing tribal festival and campaigning in view of polls.

"Despite limited resources, sanitation workers are working overtime to keep the city clean," Kumar said.

He claimed that one worker has been permanently deployed at each ward to monitor the situation.

Besides this, 10-12 junior engineer-rank officials have been engaged to keep a track of the cleanliness drive.

"Responsibility of keeping the city clean doesn't lie with the RMC alone. Ward councillors and residents should also take responsibility and inform us about the condition of their localities," Kumar said.

He added that there is a toll-free number regarding cleanliness.

"But we receive very few calls," he said.

Ranchi deputy mayor Sanjeev Vijayvargiya, who is also the ward councillor of ward number 10 (Kokar), said.

"Garbage piling up on the roads is a bad thing. Therefore, I took it seriously and directed the sanitation in-charge of the area to ensure cleanliness by 12pm on Friday."
