The Congress extended its support when JMM supremo Sibu Soren filed his nomination papers from the Dumka Lok Sabha seat on Monday.
This is the tenth occasion when Sibu would contest the LS elections from his traditional bastion. He has so far won seven times from Dumka. If he wins this time, it would be his fourth consecutive victory.
The Congress showed its unity as Sibu’s main opponent is JVM(P) chief Babulal Marandi. Sibu had defeated Marandi in 1991 and 1996 LS elections from Dumka. But in 1998, Marandi defeated Sibu. The JVM(P) supremo also defeated his wife Rupi Soren in 1999.
A two-km long procession was taken out by Sibu’s supporters from the Dumka airport to the deputy commissioner’s office while the JMM chief was on his way to file nomination papers.
Chief minister Hemant Soren, senior Congress leaders Furkan Ansari and Rajendra Singh, RJD leader Suresh Paswan, JMM leaders Vishnu Bhaiyya and Nalin Soren were present on the occasion.
“I am 100% sure that I will win the election this time again. I have sacrificed my life for the cause of Jharkhand. The people love me,” Sibu said.
JMM manifesto raises mineral royalty issue
JMM which released its election manifesto in Dumka on Monday expressed serious concern over not getting proper royalty for minerals from the central government.
On this occasion, JMM chief Sibu Soren said his party’s aim was to make Jharkhand a developed state. “We are getting only 12% royalty while JMM has been demanding 20% royalty for a long time,”he said.
JMM leaders would take up the issue during campaigns, he added. The manifesto demanded a compensation of `18,000 crore from Coal India for land acquisition in Jharkhand.
