With the Congress declaring the names of six candidates from Jharkhand on Saturday, suspense still prevails over the Ranchi seat. Also, the party is still undecided on whom to give the ticket to for the Koderma seat.
Surprisingly, the name of sitting MP from Ranchi Subodh Kant Sahai was missing from the list.
The Congress is thinking about fielding a celebrity candidate from Ranchi in place of Sahai this time. Yesteryear actor Raj Babbar or former cricketer Mohammad Azharuddin may be contenders for the seat. “The party is considering a celebrity candidate for the Ranchi seat. Raj Babbar is one of the names,” Sukhdeo Bhagat, the state Congress president, said. Meanwhile, Sahai is camping in New Delhi.
However, three more names — Deepika Pandey, Gopal Sahu and Chandan Bagchi — also surfaced on Sunday as claimants for the seat. Youth Congress general secretary Pandey, who is considered to be close to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, is being seen as a strong contender for the seat. Pandey, however, told HT, “I am not aware about contesting the polls.”
Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee (JPCC) treasurer Gopal Sahu and former Bihar Congress chief Chandan Bagchi are also in the fray.
Unhappy with the decision of Ajay Dubey contesting from Dhanbad in place of Chandrasekhar Dubey, Dubey quit on Sunday and joined Trinamool Congress.
Kalicharan Munda got the ticket from Khunti constituency while Hazaribagh legislator Saurav Narain Singh was given the ticket from Hazaribagh.
