Adirindhi, the Telugu version of Mersal, was postponed due to not being censored on time. On November 2, the Telugu dubbed version of Vijay’s Mersal received U/A certificate from the censor board. Mersal has already joined the Rs 200 crore club. The film has reportedly collected Rs $11 million overseas, and with the release of Adirindhi, the tally is likely to go up by several crore.
Initially, the Vijay-starrer was expected to release on October 27, but it was postponed. The decision was taken because the BJP had taken offence to the GST scene in the film, and some fans had attacked the censor board for siding with the political party.
Prasoon Joshi, the current chief of censor board had even said to ANI, “I am surprised with the accusations on the CBFC for the delay. It’s a usual process which is getting unfairly and unnecessarily sensationalised. The film will get its certificate by the CBFC as fairly as it got for its Tamil version.”
Though the filmmakers have received the certificate, the release date of the film is yet to be announced. Expectations, though, are for the film to release on November 9. The film directed by Atlee, stars Samantha Akkineni, Kajal Aggarwal and Nithya Menon in leading roles. Vadivelu and Kovai Sarala play pivotal roles in the film produced by Sri Thenandal Studios.
