Manikandan, who just gave us Kaaka Muttai (Crow's Egg), has now embarked on a completely different theme. His next film, Kutramum Thandanaiyum (Crime and Punishment), will be a straight forward crime drama, a simple tale -- unlike Kaaka Muttai, which had layered social ramifications.

In a chat with this writer this morning in Chennai, Manikandan said the first copy of his movie would be ready by the end of this month, and would have Vidharth, Nasser, Pooja Devariya and Aishwarya Rajesh playing important characters. Illaiyaraaja would set the music.

Watch Kaakka Muttai trailer here:

Devariya is a stage artiste who is well known and popular among those who patronise Tamil theatre. We saw Rajesh essaying the mother of the two slum boys in Kaaka Muttai, and in this brief appearance, she engaged us as one trying to get her husband released from jail, even while providing for her two sons.

Kutramum Thandanaiyum was inspired by a short story, but Manikandan, for reasons best known to him, is unwilling to divulge anything more about the plot. But he averred that this work would be completely different from Kaaka Muttai. People might have certain expectations from me, but "I do not want to be typecast as a helmer creating one particular kind of cinema". He would like to experiment with different genres.

And crime and spooky stuff seem to be in these days in Tamil cinema.
