It is never a happy feeling with couples, long married, go in for a divorce. It’s even more dramatic when they are celebrities we love. Kollywood’s power couple Gautami and Kamal Haasan has called it quits after 13 years of relationship.

Announcing the separation, actor Gautami put a long post on her blog, explaining her position. Without divulging the reason, she has gone on to say that it was one of the toughest decisions of her life and that she continues to have great respect for Kamal Haasan. But her priority is her daughter Subbalakshmi (from her first marriage), she added.

In recent times, there have been a couple of celebrity marriages that have bitten the dust. Here’s a look at others who struggled to keep their marriage intact and went in for a split.

Soundarya - Ashwin Ramkumar

In September 2016, producer Soundarya, daughter of superstar Rajinikanth, took to Twitter to make a formal announcement that her industrialist husband Ashwin Ramkumar and she are splitting after six years of marriage. Divorce talks are on, she had added.

Soundarya and Ashwin got married in 2010 and have a one-year-old son, Ved. Rumours about distress in the couple’s marriage had been doing the rounds for a while and there were speculations that the couple was headed for splitsville.

“News about my marriage is true. We have been separated for over a year & divorce talks are on. I request all to respect my family’s privacy,” she had tweeted to clear the air.

Filmmaker Priyadarshan - actor Lissy Lakshmi

In September again, came another shocker - popular Malayalam actor Lissy Lakshmi confirmed that her marriage with filmmaker Priyadarshan had officially ended. The couple had married in 1990, and soon after Lissy had given up acting. They had filed for divorce in March this year.

In a news report appearing on September 16, she called the procedure an ordeal and added that she felt relieved. “My marriage with Priyadarshan officially ended today. We both have signed the final papers at the family court in Chennai. This has been a real ordeal,” Lissy said in a statement.

“In recent times, all celebrity divorces, from Hrithik (Roshan) and Sussanne to Dilip and Manju (Warrier) to most recently Amala (Paul) and Vijay all have been mutually agreed divorces. I am sure it also must have been painful to those couples but whatever differences they may have had, they all decided to respect each other,” she had added.

The couple has a daughter and son from the marriage.

Manju Warrier - Dileep

In May 2014, the Malayalam film How Old Are You hit the screens and in no time went on to be a hit. The film’s protagonist was the very pretty Manju Warrier, a leading Malayalam actor, who had quit acting post her marriage to Malayalam film star Dileep in 1998. The actor’s return to tinsel town was hailed and nothing could have been better than arriving with a bang! But soon after, came the devastating news - the couple were divorcing. In July 2014, the duo filed a joint petition before the family court in Kochi seeking a divorce, after 16 years of marriage. The couple has a daughter together.

There were rumours that her friends were to be blamed for the separation. The actor, however, took to Facebook to clear up things and posted a message in Malayalam.

“The decision to separate was mutual and we have already filed a divorce petition (July 24) and this was purely a personal decision,” wrote Manju in her post. She wrote that her close friends -- Geethu, Samyuktha, Bhavana, Poornima and Swetha Menon stood by her “during thick and thin, but there is talk that they are responsible for the problems in my personal life and this has not only pained them, but me as well”.

“The decisions that I have taken are mine, I will face the consequences and none of my friends had influenced my decision.” In her note, she wished Dileep “the best” and also informed that she won’t fight for the custody of her teenage daughter who lives with her father.

Amala Paul - Vijay

Actor Amala Paul, who had been married to director AL Vijay in 2014, went in for a divorce in August 2016. The duo met during the making of Deiva Thirumagal, which Vijay was directing. While the two were romantically linked, they both stoutly refuted all claims. However, they did eventually get married in Chennai in 2014.

While nobody really knows what went wrong, claims and counter claims have always been thrown around. Some reports suggest that Amala was unhappy with the fact that Vijay’s family was interfering with her career, while others claimed that Vijay had hinted to the fact that she cheated on him. Sadly, all of this will remain in the realm of speculation.

Prabhudheva - Latha

Filmmaker-choreographer Prabhudheva, who has found success and fame both in Kollywood and Bollywood, has had quite a turbulent personal life too. The director who gave hits like Pokkiri (2007), Wanted (2009) and Rowdy Rathore (2012), first tasted success back in the early ‘90s for his incredible dancing skills. In 1995, he married classical dancer Ramlath. Hailing from a Muslim family, she converted to Hinduism and changed her name to Latha. Together, they had three sons and were happy till trouble came knocking at their doorstep. In 2008, the couple lost their son Vishal to cancer. Soon after, there were rumours of his affair with actor Nayanthara, with whom he went on to have a live-in relationship.

In 2010, Prabhudheva and Latha agreed on a divorce settlement with the filmmaker agreeing to give her three residential properties, two cars and Rs 10 lakh in alimony. In return, Latha has agreed to relinquish all her rights and claims over Prabhudheva and his other properties. She additionally agreed to withdraw all the cases she had filed against him.

Sadly, his relationship with Nayathara too ended in a separation in 2012.

Nagarjuna - Lakshmi Daggubati

Telugu superstar Nagarjuna Akkineni, who hails from a very influential film family of Andhra Pradesh, married Lakshmi Daggubati in 1984. Lakshmi is the daughter of Dr D Ramanaidu, the founder of Suresh Productions. The couple divorced in 1990, after Nagarjuna fell in love with his Shiva co-star Amala. He married Amala in 1992. Nagarjuna has a son each from both his marriages, Naga Chaitanya (from his first marriage) and Akhil.

Prakash Raj - Lalitha Kumari

The veteran character actor Prakash Raj, who works in Tamil, Telugu, Hindi and Kannada film industries, married actor Lalitha Kumari in 1994. However, the married ended in a divorce in 2009 after 15 years of marriage. He has two daughters and a son from that marriage. Prakash later married choreographer Pony Verma in 2010 with whom he has a son.
