Vijay’s Mersal stirs up a box-office storm, makes Rs 51 crore worldwide on Day 1

This year’s big Diwali Tamil release, Mersal, has emerged victorious at the box office. It’s first day worldwide collections stand at Rs 51 crore.

Thalapathy Vijay’s Mersal, which was big Diwali Tamil release, has managed to strike big at the box-office and it’s setting new records. According to trade pundits, the film has grossed a whopping Rs 51 crore from its first day worldwide. It is believed that the Atlee-directed movie raked in around Rs 34 crore from domestic market and Rs 17 crore plus from overseas market. At this rate, the film is expected to do a business of over Rs 100 crore from its opening weekend. Despite mixed reports from audiences and critics alike, the film has won over the masses and has registered tremendous opening.

The film released in record number of places in several places and it helped in registering big numbers. In Kerala, the film released in 350 screens, surpassing the previous record of 320 screens by Baahubali 2. In Malaysia, a Tamil dominant market, it opened in 800 screens and took a solid opening. Directed by Atlee, Mersal is his second time collaboration with Vijay after last year’s blockbuster Theri. In the film, Vijay played triple role and was paired with Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen and Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Actor-filmmaker SJ Suryah, who impressed audiences and critics alike as a menacing villain in Spyder, played the antagonist.

Tipped to be made on a whopping budget of Rs 130 crore, Mersal is the most expensive film in Vijay’s career, superseding his action-adventure flick Puli, made on a budget of Rs 100 crore. The film has been dubbed in Telugu as Adhirindi, but it’s yet to hit the screens as its release got delayed due to censor issues.
