Before its release, the hype around Puli, Vijay and Sridevi’s Tamil multi-starrer, made us believe it was going to be as big as Baahubali. Sadly, after a flying start, collecting Rs 10.75 crore on its opening day, this fantasy tale fell flat on its face over the weekend, managing only Rs 31.7 crore as earning in the first three days. The film also stars other big-ticket stars such as Sudeep, Hansika Motwani and Shruti Haasan.

According to a report in boxofficecollection.in, Puli managed to gross only Rs 24.50 in collections from Tmail Nadu (excluding collections from neighbouring Karnataka and Kerala). Made at an estimated budget of Rs 118 crore, the film couldn’t sustain the momentum gained on the opening day despite a three-day weekend. This, despite the fact that across Tamil Nadu, it saw an 80% to 70% occupancy respectively on the first two days.

Puli review: Vijay’s fantasy drama is a fantastic flop

The Chimbu Deven-directed Puli got a fantastic opening grossing Rs 10.75 crore in Tamil Nadu, surpassing the previous records held by Vikram’s I and Ajith’s Yennai Arindhaal. However, the film couldn’t retain its leadership position, slipping in collections with Rs 7.50 crore in its kitty at the end of day two. Sunday maintained its downward trend with collections standing at Rs 6.25 crore from across the state.

The opening weekend collection in the state stood at Rs 24.50 crore while it had done Rs 31.7 crore in overall domestic circuit (Karnataka contributing Rs 4 crore and Kerala chipping in with Rs 3.2 crore).
