In her final journey Suchitra Sen received an honour like Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das and one missed by Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore and film-maker Satyajit Ray.
“Suchitra Sen has not been cremated inside Keoratala crematorium. She has been cremated on a makeshift pyre a block away from the crematorium. This was basically the VIP crematorium during the British period where only well-known freedom fighters used to be cremated,” said veteran Congress leader Nirbed Roy.
Legends of the Indian freedom struggle like Deshbandhu, Jatin Das, Basanti Devi, Jatindra Mohan Sengupta and author Troilokyanath Mukhopadhay were cremated at the spot.
“We all like Suchitra Sen. But we are very sorry to say that a freedom fighter like Deshabandu and an actress like Sen do not enjoy same stature. The chief minister is not aware of history and she always takes hasty decisions even on sensitive issues,” said Roy.
The veteran leader went ahead to mention that prominent Bengalis like Rabindranath Tagore (who was cremated at the Nimtala crematorium), Satyajit Roy, Jyoti Basu, Rituparno Ghosh, Uttam Kumar, Ganesh Pyne (all cremated inside the electric crematorium) were not cremated at this historical venue.
