Superstar Rajinikanth and megastar Mammootty were last seen together on screen in Mani Ratnam’s 1991 cult classic Thalapathi. If the industry sources are anything to go by, the duo is likely to reunite after two decades for Pa. Ranjith’s Kaala, in which Rajinikanth plays a slum-lord-turned-gangster.

While social media is abuzz with reports that Mammootty might play a BR Ambedkar-like character in the film which is currently on the floors in Mumbai, where the team will shoot another month and then head to Chennai for the next schedule.

What’s interesting is that the film features a character called Beemji (short for Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar), named after the Twitter handle of its director Ranjith, a self-confessed fan of Ambedkar. Mammootty is rumoured to be playing this character and it has to be seen whether he is indeed part of the project.

The film also stars Nana Patekar, and it is yet not sure what role he will be essaying in the film, despite rumours that he might play the antagonist. Actor Pankaj Tripathi, known for his work in films such as Gangs of Wasseypur and Nil Battey Sannata, plays a cop with grey shades in the movie which also features Anjali Patil, Huma Qureshi and a host of supporting artists.

Dhanush is bankrolling the project and there are rumours that he might play the younger version of his father-in-law in the film which will shine the spotlight on the lives of oppressed Tamils in Mumbai. With the film’s shooting going at brisk pace, the makers are finding it extremely difficult to avoid leaks, especially pictures from the sets. The title track of Kaala, which has music by Santhosh Narayanan, has also mysteriously surfaced online.
