A former United Nations official Jose Ortega-Osona, has received 2 1/2 years in prison for possessing thousands of child pornography pictures and over a hundred tapes.
One picture described as "horrific" by the judge was of a two-year-old child being subjected to genital
mutilation.
The 42-year-old Spaniard, who joined the UN's Fertility and Planning Section in 2006, had thousands of pictures and hundreds of movie was also fined $12,500.
Ortega-Osona claimed that he was "curious" but the judge said "Your problem is not mere curiosity."
Normally, child porn gets eight years but the federal judge pointed out that the accused had not distributed any other material warranting a lesser sentence.
Ortega-Osona was arrested in Canada, last year, which led to a search of his home. Last year, another former top United Nations weapons inspector, Scott Ritter, has been caught in a sex sting in which he allegedly tells an undercover cop posing as 15-year-old girl in an online chat room that he wanted to have sex with her.
The criminal complaint cites several charges including unlawful contact with a minor, criminal use of a communications facility and indecent exposure.
Ritter who had a preliminary hearing on December 17 remains free on $25,000 bail.
