Former President APJ Abdul Kalam has emphasised on the need to have more special schools across the country for the mentally challenged children to boost their confidence and abilities. Handing out certificates to students of SPJ Sadhana School, for the mentally challenged children and
young adults, last evening Kalam said, "We need more such organisations or schools like this in our country. These schools increases their confidence, capability and enhances their skills."

Kalam was in the city to attend two functions on Wednesday.

He also felt that there is a need to train teachers to handle these "special students".

"For these (mentally challenged) students there is a need for proper trained teachers to handle and treat them differently than the normal ones."

"This is a unique school. They are doing a great job of educating, training and empowering these special students to face the outside world," he said.

Kalam also advised that students with such disabilities must be enrolled in special schools than delaying their admission.

"The parents must admit their children in special schools to ensure that they get right training in the right atmosphere at the right time."

"To treat these special students the family and teachers must work jointly.
