Criticising the working of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh said that it should be more careful and diligent in carrying out its analysis, which is its primary job. Ramesh made this statement after the IPCC in
its report last month had said that the Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035. But later IPCC admitted its mistake and had said its conclusion was based on “poorly substantiated” estimates.

“It appears there has been a failure of system… I wish more diligent approach should have been taken. IPCC is a scientific body, its job is to perform scientific and not preach. It’s not a advocacy body and its job is not to preach,” he said.

The minister was talking to the media on the sidelines of a function at Mansar, 60 km from Jammu.

However, he added that irrespective of mistakes made in the in the study of IPCC, there is concern over the health of the glaciers as it affects people living in 11 Himalayan states.

“The health of glaciers is poor and it’s a concern for us,” said the minister.
