Nonagenarian CPI-M stalwart Jyoti Basu, who had appealed to Congress supporters to vote for the Left in the assembly bypolls, could not cast his vote on Saturday due to failing health.

"Basu, who is a voter in the Belgachia (East) assembly constituency in Kolkata could not go to the polling booth because of his health condition," his personal assistant Joykrishna Ghosh said.

In the Lok Sabha polls earlier this year, Basu could not cast his vote due to the same reason.

The 95-year-old leader has for quite some time been confined to his residence at Salt Lake and is unable to take part in any political programme.

By-elections were held on Saturday to ten assembly seats.

Trinamool Congress chief and Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee cast her vote at the Alipur constituency in South Kolkata.
