Busan, a port city located at the southern tip of the Republic of South Korea, is now Mumbai’s new sister city. Mumbai Mayor Shubha Raul and Busan Mayor Hur Nam-sik signed an MoU on November 19, at the Busan City hall formalising the relationship between the two cities. Sister cities is
an agreement between towns, cities, even counties in geographically and politically distinct areas to promote cultural and commercial ties.

There are roughly 500 Indians who have made Busan their home – for work or for education.

“Mumbai and Busan have a lot in common: both are port cities and have a strong film industry. We are looking at exchanges in the fields of culture, education, especially commerce, since Mumbai is the commercial capital of India,” said Nam-sik.

Raul said: “Mumbai is known for its film industry and its stock exchange, and we promise to cooperate and share with Busan our knowledge of these sectors.”

Currently Mumbai has six sister cities — Berlin, London, Los Angeles, St Petersburg, Stuttgart and Yokohama.
