The Nehru Nagar police claim they have enough circumstantial evidence to nail Mohammed Ajmeri Sheikh (29), arrested on Monday in connection with the rape and murder of a nine-year-old schoolgirl on Sunday.  “We have circumstantial evidence against Sheikh and he has not been able to
explain where he was at the time of the incident,” said Dilip Sawant, deputy commissioner of police, Zone VI.

The police said Sheikh was arrested for theft on March 5 and released the next day at 4 pm. The incident took place early Sunday morning. “He has not revealed where he went after being let off,” said an officer. The victim’s body was found on the terrace of the police quarters opposite the Nehru Nagar police station in Kurla East.

A senior officer, requesting anonymity, said, “Fresh injury marks were found on Sheikh’s body including his private parts. He could not justify the cause of the injuries. We are waiting for the medical reports to confirm his involvement in the rape.”

Moreover, a child’s watch was recovered from Sheikh. “We asked Sheikh who gave him the watch but he has not said anything,” the officer added. Senior inspector Prakash Kale refused to comment on the investigation.

There are more than 10 cases of assault, theft, threatening, rioting and Arms Act against Sheikh and he was also externed in the past.
