The 22-year-old Amrut Mane, according to his hostel mates, was in love with a girl from his college.
Mane had written her name of the girl on the floor of his room with his blood before committing suicide on Monday, said the police.
Shailesh Puri, a BMS student of Sydenham
College and resident of the hostel, said Mane was an unknown face in the hostel and had just two friends in the building that houses about 500 students from five colleges in the city.
“I had never seen Mane and had never spoken to him,” said Puri.
All students stay in separate rooms in the hostel.
“Sai told me that when he went to Mane’s room he saw three beer bottles…one was broken whose glass was used by Mane to cut his wrist and write the name of a female friend on the floor from his blood. The second bottle was half empty while the third was untouched,” said Puri.
“One-sided love might have been the cause of Mane’s suicide,” said a hostel resident.
“Sai told the police that he had taken a cup of tea for Mane which was very odd as we never take tea up to any friend’s room except when the person is sick. We always come to the canteen on the ground floor,” said Puri.
According to Mane’s friends and hostelites, Mane’s financial status was not good.
“Whenever his friends spoke to him about his family, Mane shouted at them and told them to change the subject,” said a hostel resident who stayed in a room next to Mane’s.
“Since alcohol was found in Mane’s room, the authorities have told us that all our rooms would be checked from now,” said another hostelite studying MBA from Sydenham College.
