Your 70-minute drive from Sion to South Mumbai will soon become a 20-minute zip eliminating 19 signals, which slow down traffic. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has said that two flyovers at King’s Circle and Lalbaug would be ready by the end of this year.

This will take the total number of flyovers between Sion and south Mumbai to 10.

These will help commuters cut down travel time on this stretch.

“We will complete the King’s Circle flyover and the Lalbaug flyover by the end of this year,” said MMRDA spokesperson Dilip Kawathkar.

In 2007, the MMRDA began construction of four flyovers on the busy Ambedkar Road, which is one of the main roads connecting the island city to the eastern suburbs.

These flyovers stretch from Byculla zoo till Sion.

Two of the flyovers — the 681-m Sion Junction Flyover and the 480-m Hindmata Flyover — were opened to public in 2009.

The 1,500-m King’s Circle Tulpule Chowk Flyover, stretching from King’s Circle Bridge to Maheshwari Garden, is being built at a cost of Rs 79 crore.

The 2,400-m Lalbaug Flyover, which is being built at a cost of Rs 147 crore, stretches from Byculla Zoo to ITC Parel.

Once completed, the total number of flyovers of Dr Ambedkar Road will be eight. The existing flyovers are in Byculla, Parel, Dadar TT and Sion. This arterial road is used by commuters to reach Thane and Navi Mumbai and connects to Goa and Pune Highway.
