The railways will hold recruitment examinations on a single day across India, Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Saturday. “A couple of years back, there were problems during the railway recruitment exams. Now we have made changes in the recruitment policy and exams will be
held on a selected day at the same time across the country. This will ensure that people across all states have an opportunity to give exams and need not come to other states,” the Trinamool Congress chief said in Mumbai.

She was referring to the violence unleashed by Maharashtra Navnirman Sena supporters during recruitment examination in 2007 and 2008. The MNS had beaten up candidates, claiming that there were hardly any Maharashtrians among them because the railways had not advertised in local Marathi media.

Banerjee also said the candidates could give the examination in Urdu or in the local language of the region.
