A day after a small portion of the arterial Zakaria Bunder Road between Cotton Green and Sewri stations sunk and the underground water pipeline developed cracks, no repairs have been carried out. This means that the water supply in Dadar, Sewri, Parel and Wadala will be
affected.

The 48-inch pipeline, an inlet main, which carries water to the Bhandarwada hill service reservoir, supplies water to these areas.

“The areas will get less water for a few days until the line is not plugged,” said an officer from the hydraulic department, requesting anonymity.

Due to the leakage in the water main, a portion of the arterial road had sunk and developed cracks on Tuesday.

On excavating further, it was seen that a huge cavity was formed underneath.

“The water line had developed cracks and was leaking. After the patch had sunk we immediately took action to avoid a possible cave-in in the future,” said a civic official.

The official added that a lot of water is oozing from the pipeline — close to 6,000 litres per hour — and to repair it the line will have to be dewatered and this will take at least two days.
