Crime Branch officials gunned down a suspected Chhota Shakeel aide at Deonar on Saturday morning. Officials said Sunil Mandal alias Sunil Bangali (30) was wanted in more than 16 cases of murder, attempt to murder, rioting, assault and other serious crimes. He mostly operated in Shivaji
Nagar and Deonar areas of central Mumbai.

Police Inspector Dinesh Kadam of Unit III said: “We got a tip-off that Bangali was to come to Sambhaji Nagar Society in Deonar to meet someone on Saturday morning. A trap was laid to arrest him.”

When the Crime Branch officials spotted Mandal, they asked him to surrender. But he opened fire on them, the officials claimed. The police fired back in defence, and Mandal got injured. They rushed Mandal to Rajawadi Hospital at Ghatkopar, but he succumbed to his injury before admission.

A police source said on Friday evening, Mandal had allegedly assaulted Mastan Kalya, a resident of Shivaji Nagar. Kalya has been admitted to the intensive care unit of Rajawadi hospital.
