Rattled by the looming water crisis, the Central Railway (CR) has placed one of its biggest orders of drinking water for Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) at Rs 96.5 lakh.
CR’s order is for supply of potable water through tankers for a period of one year.
It recently procured
water supply for Byculla and Mazgaon stations at Rs 10 lakh and another few lakh for supply at Kalyan station.
CST sees more than 10 lakh passengers daily and drinking water is required at the station, platform taps and offices in the railway canteen.
Swadheen Kshatriya, municipal commissioner, had said the civic body would stop supplying non-potable water to the railways and other public undertakings from March.
Chief Minister Ashok Chavan had requested the railways to conserve water at a recent public function at CST.
CR chief spokesperson SC Mudgerikar said the railways were prepared to tackle the water crisis.
“We recycle about 1.5 lakh litres of water daily at CST and are setting up another recycling plant at Kurla terminus,” Mudgerikar added.
The Land and Amenities Directorate, which deals with the supply of water to stations, trains and railway colonies, had written a letter to all zonal headquarters few months ago, asking them to furnish details of their plans to ensure smooth supply of water in their respective areas.
