Myanmar's junta Wednesday allowed detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi to meet with elderly members of her party following her request in a letter to the regime chief, an official said. The democracy icon was taken to a state guesthouse in Yangon at around 11.30 am (0400 GMT) for
the talks -- the first with senior National League for Democracy (NLD) colleagues outside her home or prison this year.

"They are meeting now," the Myanmar official told AFP on condition of anonymity, confirming that the talks included party chairman Aung Shwe, secretary Lwin and executive committee member Lun Tin.

In a letter to Myanmar's Senior General Than Shwe last month, Suu Kyi requested visits to the three men to pay her respects to them.

They are all in poor health and aged at least 85.

"Daw Suu accepted the authorities' suggestion to meet them all in one place for security reasons," her lawyer and NLD spokesman Nyan Win told reporters on Tuesday night.

Daw is a term of respect in Myanmar.
