Kiran Bedi, retired director general of police and Magsaysay award winner, should be made  the new chief information commissioner, a number of well-known personalities have said in letters sent to the prime minister. Heading the list is actor Aamir Khan, along with Magsaysay award
winners Sandeep Pande and Arvind Kejriwal, apart from other noted social activists like Anna Hazare.

The position fell vacant after Wajahat Habibullah resigned on October 21 to take charge of the newly formed Jammu and Kashmir Information Commission.

“Should the government appoint someone else, we would be grateful if it were disclosed how that person was found more suitable than Kiran Bedi,” the letters say.

Bedi has been involved in prison reforms and fighting drug abuse since she took voluntary retirement in 2007 after she was bypassed as he Delhi police commissioner.

By precedent and seniority the frontrunners for the post are the two other central information commissioners — A.N. Tiwari and M.M. Ansari.
