Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today expressed concern over disruption of academic activities at Visva Bharati University and asked the striking employees to return to work, assuring them that an impartial probe would be conducted into their allegations against the university
authorities.

"I have been deeply pained by the turn of events at the Visva Bharati University during the last few days leading to the disruption of academic activities and normal life in the campus," Singh, who is the chancellor of the university in Santiniketan, said in a statement.

He appealed to those involved in the agitation that they should desist from disrupting normal life and academic activities and withdraw the agitation.

"Thereafter, I will ensure that an impartial inquiry is conducted into the circumstances leading to the agitation and the allegations that have been levelled against the university authorities and other concerned entities," the Prime Minister said.

The majority of the employees of the university have struck work since October 24 demanding a CBI probe into alleged corru
