The area around the newly-constructed ITO Chungi underpass in east Delhi may soon turn green. To commemorate World Forestry Day, Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit inaugurated a project to develop a green cover at ITO Chungi on the lines of the AIIMS flyover. More than 4,000 saplings
will be planted in the 36-acre area by July this year.

Dikshit said the public works department and other agencies should ensure maintenance and survival of plants, besides putting up appropriate signage at ITO Chungi. Dikshit said similar green cover would be developed at other construction sites in Delhi. “I have told construction agencies to make provision for greenery where construction is being done,” she said

Dikshit added that her government was making efforts to organise the first-ever ‘green Commonwealth Games’ this October.

“The green cover of the national capital has increased substantially from 22 sq kms in 1993 to 300 sq kms in 2007 and 32 forests have been successfully developed here,” she said.
