The Delhi government has asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to depute a special taskforce to prevent breeding of mosquitoes in the Games Village. The team will fumigate the area and drain out water from around the Village. The government has also sought the Army’s help to
drain out water from the surrounding areas of the Village.

"We have started the process of seeking the help of the Army. For the time being, we have requested the MCD to depute a team of 50-100 who will carry out anti-larvae measures inside the Village," said Kiran Walia, health minister of Delhi.

The chairman of MCD's public health committee V.K. Monga said that staff has already been deputed there. "We have constituted a special team that will carry out fogging and spraying inside the village," he said.

On Tuesday, the Delhi government had held a high-powered meeting to address the problem of stagnant water that has accumulated outside the Village.

The Games Village is surrounded by pools of water on three sides, making it a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

The MCD is finding it difficult to tackle the situation, officials said. "The Army has the requisite experience, training and the necessary equipment. So, we have sought their help. They are likely to start work near the Games Village soon," said a senior official.

The civic bodies are blaming incessant rains and stagnant water at Games sites for the rapid increase in dengue cases.
