An alleged argument between the son of a Rajya Sabha MP and the relative of a Delhi MLA turned violent in Southeast Delhi on Sunday night, police said. The two groups pelted also stones at each other that forced the police to lob tear gas shells to control the mob. The police
said that the incident was reported from Jamia Nagar in Okhla late on Sunday night.

The son of Congress Rajya Sabha MP Parvez Hashmi and a relative of Okhla MLA Asif Mohammed Khan allegedly entered into a verbal duel over some issue that later turned ugly with around 200 supporters of the latter marching to Jamia Nagar police station and pelting stones at it.

As the group turned violent, police lobbed four teargas shells to control it. There were reports of police firing in the air but later they denied it.

“I have listed a question in the ongoing assembly question as to what is being done with the 50-acre plot in Madanpur Khadar, which belongs to the Gram Sabha land. This irked Parvez Hashmi and another local politician. Hashmi’s supporters attacked me on Sunday night,” Khan alleged.

Hashmi refused to comment on the incident.

“We have received complaints from both the sides but no case has been registered. We are investigating the matter. A case of rioting has been registered against those who pelted stones at the police station,” said a senior police officer on the condition of anonymity, as he is not authorised to speak to the media.

Hashmi is the former representative from Okhla while Khan is the present MLA from the constituency where Jamia Nagar is located.

Khan won the by-election from the Okhla assembly segment after Hashmi resigned from the seat following his nomination to the Rajya Sabha.

Police personnel have been deployed at the Jamia Nagar locality and security has been stepped up at the New Friends colony residence of Hashmi, a senior police officer said.
