Enitre north India is in the grip of a chill wave and mercury plummeted to 7.4 degrees Celsius in Delhi today, making it the season's lowest so far. The drop in temperature is due to the snowfall in upper parts of the country and cool winds blowing to the northern plains, the MeT Department
said.
Today's minimum, which is one degree below normal for this time of the year, is the lowest for the season so far.
Yesterday, the minimum was 8.4 degree Celsius while Saturday's 7.7 degrees was the previous lowest for the season.
The weather office attributed the drop in temperature to snowfall in upper parts of the country and a cool winds that brought the winter chill to the northern plains.
Visibility dropped to 500 meters around 6.30 a.m. as a shallow layer of fog engulfed the capital city. However, no flights were delayed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA).
"The maximum and minimum temperature is likely to fall further following snowing in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh," an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.
