Rajasthan University (RU) on Tuesday alleged that they were forced to surrender their basketball matches against hosts Bhartiya Hindu University (BHU) after being threatened by armed goons. In a letter to Bhartiya Vishwa Vidhyalaya Sangh, New Delhi, and the Sports Ministry, the
University said the goons even threatened to kill them if they didn’t lose their match.

The incident took place during the all-India inter-university basketball tournament in Varanasi held from January 27 to February 1. “Unfortunately, we have to return midway because, like Delhi University and Satyabhama University from Chennai, we too were compelled to withdraw from the tournament, amid continuous life threats and unfair play,” said Bharat Bhushan, basketball coach, Rajasthan University.

Rajasthan University were supposed to play quarterfinal match against BHU.

As per the final results, BHU stood first and MG Kashi Vidhyapith were adjudged runners up while Delhi University were declared third even though the team did not play the match against Chennai.

BHU Sports Board general secretary Vidya Sagar Singh hit back, saying, “the statement from Rajasthan University was a well thought out plan by Delhi University to corner us and derecognise the tourney”.
