Australian High Commissioner to India Peter N Varghese said the attacks on Indians in Australia need to be seen only as 'isolated incidents'. There has been a steady increase in the number of people coming to Australia in search of jobs in the guise of students who sometimes found
themselves under pressure and the problems they run into could not be dubbed as racial attacks, Varghese told reporters at a function here last night.

To avoid such situations, steps to reform emigration rules have been taken, which would open up opportunities for skilled workers who would not be facing any problems in getting proper jobs, he said.

Indians have a significant place among the expatriate community in Australia, Varghese, whose parents hail from Kerala, said on his first visit to the state after taking over as Australian envoy to India.

For Australia, India has been a major source of skilled workers and the emigration rules would enhance opportunities for Indian skilled workforce, he said.

He said a large number of Indian students come in Australia every year and also the Indian tourists visiting the country had been on the increase.

The High Commissioner later visited the state's IT base Technopark and expressed keen interest in exploring business co-operation between the two countries.
