Prohibitory orders have been promulgated on the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district to prevent breach of peace due to large scale smuggling of essential commodities across the border.
The order will remain in force for sixty days, District Magistrate of Cooch
Behar Smaraki Mahapatra said on Thursday.
The District Information Officer K K Sarkar said any person violating the order shall be liable for prosecution.
The order was promulgated following apprehension of breach of peace in the border areas of the district due to shortage
of essential commodities caused by large scale of smuggling into Bangladesh by miscreants.
According to the order, no person would be allowed to carry 24 scheduled commodities within a distance of one
kilometre from the Bangladesh border in eight police stations in the district from 9 pm to 6 am without prior written
permission of the District Magistrate or the Sub-divisional Officer or Block Development Officer concerned.
These police stations identified are Tufanganj, Sitai Mathabhanga, Mekhliganj, Kuchlibari, Dinhata, Sitalkuchi and
Haldibari.
Also a ban was clamped on the grazing of cattle within 300 metres of the Indo-Bangladesh border from 6 pm to 6 am.
