A magnitude 5.9 quake hit early Sunday south of the Kuril Islands, a disputed archipelago in the Pacific Ocean administered by Russia but claimed in part by Japan, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported.
The quake struck 210 kilometres (130 miles) south of Severo-Kurilsk at a depth of 72
kilometres at 6:38 am (1838 GMT Saturday), according to the geophysics service of the Russian Academy of Sciences, it reported.
No tsunami warning was issued, it said.
