GaysIt’s legal now, so it better be safe too. And the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is considerate enough. This apex body of biomedical research in Ansari Nagar is developing India’s first dual usage condom that is meant for usage during gay sex.

“We are developing a condom that could be used for anal, as well as vaginal sex. Work is almost accomplished,” said an ICMR official, not wanting to be named. The official added that the condom normally available in the market is made for vaginal sex, not for anal penetration, which is the gay version of sexual intercourse. There seem to be many takers. “I will not mind trying it,” says Sanjay Dasgupta, a software professional in Noida who is homosexual. “I hope the gay condom will be smooth and slippery with lots of extra lubrication. And because we homosexuals are more vulnerable to AIDS, it should have a double protection.”

To avoid the risk of the condom tearing during the ‘act’, ICMR has used nano fibres with latex in this dual-usage condom. “It’s an interesting innovation,” says Yajuvendra Upadhyaya, a holiday planner executive who is straight. “It is convenient for gays, bisexuals and even for those straight people who want to experiment different ways of making love with their partners.”

In the West, the condoms that are often marketed for gays have more ripples and lubes. “I hope these new condoms will finally stop me from depending on my friends in Europe and the US,” says Jaiswal, a college student who requested not to be identified by his first name since he is not ‘out’ yet. “Otherwise I have to ask them to send me a supply of gay condoms. Unlike the condoms you get in India, these are safer and smooth.”
