Here's what men want

How do you picture the stereotypical urban Indian male? Our four city (Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai) survey throws up some predictable responses – and a lot of surprises!

CoupleHow do you picture the stereotypical urban Indian male? Tough on the outside, soft on the inside; liberal in his attitude towards most things but still a little conservative when it comes to matters of family; news junkie; sports freak; and a fan of Katrina Kaif for reasons that have nothing to do with her acting prowess?

The Brunch-C Fore survey validates some of these stereotypes even as it challenges others. So while the modern urban man may put a successful career above everything else (including a happy marriage), he will still try and salvage a failing relationship. Grooming is high on the agenda but chest hair is still manly. And believe it or not, a large chunk thinks sex is overrated! In this time of equality and social learning, the urban Indian male is in transition. So girls, give guys some credit. And men, pull back your shoulders and hold up your head – you’re a work in progress!

We’re not going to talk about the winner in our question on infidelity. We’re going to talk of the runner-up, because if 45% men want to take a stab at working things out despite the betrayal, well, that’s a very pleasant surprise. According to the city-wise break-up, 51% of the men from Delhi would try and salvage their relationship, followed by Kolkata at 48%, Mumbai at 44% and Chennai at 39%.

The answer to the question about the most important quality in your partner has us a bit stumped. (Chennai is the most conservative with 52% men voting for ‘adjusting nature’.) Stumped because in the very next question, 76% of the men polled believe that women should be ‘strong and independent.’ Male hypocrisy? Premchand Palety, chief executive of C Fore, says that ‘adjusting’ and ‘strong and independent’ are not mutually exclusive terms. “A docile, dependent wife is a liability in the new age,” he says. Hmm..

If your girlfriend/wife was unfaithful, what would you do?
45% Would be angry and upset but would try and work it out
46% Leave her (can’t accept it, too much of a betrayal)
9% Accept it (let’s get real about these things)

The most important quality in your partner should be…
Good looks (what can beat other men looking at you with undisguised jealousy?) 32%
An ‘adjusting’ nature (takes care of all that family-in-law stuff) 47%
Warm heart (that’s what will keep you going all your life) 21%

Women should be…
Strong and independent (we’re in the 21st century, people) 76%
Docile and dependent (but let’s be practical) 24%

What is / should be the most important thing in your life?
This answer is unequivocal and more or less the same across the four metros. Men still measure themselves and each other on the touchstone of professional success. Everything else is secondary. No one wants to be seen as a failure at work.
58% A successful career
28% A happy marriage
12% Great kids
2% None of the above

How important is grooming and looking good?
We knew this all along – men are keen to look their best. It’s a priority for urban men. Delhi leads the bunch with 59% men voting for being well groomed, followed closely by Mumbai (56%), Chennai (52%) and Kolkata (48%).
54% Very important
39% A little important
7% Not important at all

Would you remove the hair on your chest?
We knew this too. There are limits to what a guy will do to look good. Kolkata has the most men rooting for chest hair (77%). Next come Chennai (74%), Delhi (70%) and Mumbai (64%).
71% Aaaagh! Over my dead body
27% I might
2% I already do

Have you ever had a manicure/pedicure/facial?
This is interesting. Though Delhi has the highest number of men saying they’d like to look good, only 32% of them (the lowest among the four metros) actually seem to be making the effort to look well-groomed by going in for manicures etc.
37% Never (Real guys don’t do all this girlie stuff)
16% regularly (Come on, it’s just hygiene and cleanliness)
47% Sometimes (It’s too much bother, but I might do it for a big occasion – like my wedding)

Rate your happiness at your workplace on a ten point scale.

Average Rating 6.3% Frankly, 6.3 out of 10 is not a fabulous rating, but it does indicate that most of the respondents are reasonably happy at work.

What sort of role does sex play in your life?
60% A big role (Is this question some kind of a joke?)
39% Not much of a role at all (It’s highly overrated)
1% Has no place in my life (Celibacy is a good thing)

Forget the 60% (that’s expected), we’re mystified by the 39% (Chennai leads the ‘sex doesn’t play much of a role’ gang at 43%; Delhi is last at 34%).

What do you watch most on TV?
33% News
23% Sports
20% Films
16% Infotainment
8% Soaps and serials

What do you enjoy reading the most?
31% Newspapers
19% Magazines
17% Websites
13% Books – non-fiction
11% Books – fiction
9% Self-help books

How often do you cry when you get upset?
Occasionally 47%
Never 31%
Very often 22%
Delhi men cry the most (28%), followed by Mumbai and Chennai (both at 26%). The real ‘manly’ ones are in Kolkata (8%).

The sexiest Bollywood heroine?
32% Katrina Kaif
12% Kareena Kapoor
11% Priyanka Chopra
Bipasha Basu 8
Aishwarya Rai 7
Deepika Padukone 7
Sonam Kapoor 5
Preity Zinta 5
Kajol 4
Rani Mukherjee 3
Rest others
(All figures are in %)

The Bollywood hero you really like?
21% Aamir Khan
20% Shah Rukh Khan
Amitabh Bachchan 13
Hrithik Roshan 9
Akshay Kumar 7
Ranbir Kapoor 5
Salman Khan 5
Saif Ali Khan 4
Ajay Devgn 3
Shahid Kapur 2
Abhishek Bachchan 2
Rest others
(All figures are in %)

Aamir is ahead of Shah Rukh by a whisker (though SRK leads – also by a whisker – in Kolkata and Chennai). But we can’t say the same for the women. Katrina is miles ahead of the other actresses. But she’s been coming out tops in so many surveys that we’re not surprised at all.

What would you rather do on a weekend?
Watch a cricket/football match 25
Hang out with a group of friends, including men and women and also including your girlfriend / wife 26
Hang out with the guys in a bar 18
Hang out exclusively with your girlfriend/wife 17
Be alone with a book / DVD movie 14
Rest others
(All figures are in %)

Most men don’t like hanging out exclusively with their wives / girlfriends on weekends (the tally: Delhi at 14%, Chennai at 16%, Kolkata at 18%, Mumbai at 22%.) But, unlike other centres, even fewer men in Delhi wanted to watch sports (11%)!

What’s a woman’s sexiest physical feature?
23% Eyes
Bosom 20
Waist 19
Lips 16
Legs 12
Hips 10
(All figures are in %)

So the bosom is behind...wait a minute... the eyes? That’s what 28% in Chennai, 24% in Mumbai, 24% in Delhi, 20% in Kolkata say.

Methodology
Research organisation C Fore conducted the survey in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai between 10th and 17th June, 2010. A structured questionnaire was administered to a statistically selected sample of men in these cities. In all 1,000 men in the age group of 25 to 35 years and belonging to SEC A category were interviewed.
