Microblogging service Twitter has expanded the scope of the notifications it offers, now informing users of what is happening on the service outside of their direct contacts.

The updated notifications service apparently began rolling out around June 17 but, having not been announced via Twitter's blog, is only just being discovered and reported on.

Essentially the new, updated notification service now notifies a user if another user mentions the first in a tweet and that tweet then gets favorited. Previously users would just be informed when first mentioned in a tweet or when their own tweet was favorited.

The Next Web is also reporting that the updates, still currently being rolled out, include notifying users when a tweet they re-tweeted is then re-tweeted by someone else, whereas previously users would only be notified if a tweet they had originally sent was re-tweeted.
