As another scathing attack on Tata Motors and the Left Front  set the tone for Mamata Banerjee’s rally at Singur on Tuesday, what emerged was a veiled threat that she would restart her movement for 400 acres at Singur. The surprise, however, was the presence of former Kolkata Mayor
Subrata Mukherjee who returned to share a dais with Banerjee after a split three years back.

In her usual spirited rhetoric on Tuesday, she reminded the government and the Tatas that the movement was only suspended for the time being, not withdrawn.

“We suspended it on the request of Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi. Once he returns to Kolkata on September 19, we will meet him and decide our next course of action. The state government might not follow the Constitution, democracy, morality or ideologies, but we do,” she said.

Banerjee pointed out that since the treaty between the government and her party was signed in the presence of Gandhi, it was her duty to discuss the matter with him before taking any decision.

“The government went back on its promise after signing the treaty. It announced a compensation package even when the committee under MLA Rabindranath Bhattacharya was still looking for 300 acres,” she said. Mamata, however, refused to reveal all the details of her meeting with Bhattacharjee till the opportune moment.
