Electoral process for the lone Lok Sabha seat in the Union Territory of Puducherry, where polling will take place on May 13, was set in motion today with the issuing of notification. Returning Officer for Puducherry Parliamentary seat G Ragesh Chandra said that the filing of nominations,
commencing from today, would end on April 24. While the scrutiny of papers has been slated for April 25, the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 27.

The main contest for the seat is between Union Minister of State and AICC General Secretary V Narayanasamy and sitting PMK MP M Ramadoss, who is seeking re-election for a second term.

The seat, comprising of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam regions, has a total electorate strength of 7,55,889, including 3,91,722 women, who would use their franchise through the 850 polling booths set across the constituency.

As many as 1,200 EVMs would be used for the elections. Election authorities here had received 20 complaints of alleged violation of model code of conduct of which 14 were closed following directives from the EC and the rest had been referred to the police for further investigation, Chandra said. The counting of votes would take place on May 16.
