Jailed actor Sanjay Dutt spent a quiet day in Barrack No 3 of Pune's Yerwada Central Prison on Tuesday. He met his lawyers and made cane articles.

Conspicuous by their absence were the huge crowds that had gathered outside the premises during the actor's few days stay in the Pune jail in
August after his 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case sentencing.

The second coming of Dutt to Yerwada meant he got no exemption on the workfront, and was assigned to make cane articles on the first day after his arrival from Mumbai on Monday. During his previous stint, he had been given eight days to choose the nature of work he wanted to take up.

"Dutt has been lodged in the same barrack he was during his earlier period of imprisonment," Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) Ravindra Kedari said. "He has been given cane work, which he had earlier undertaken quite successfully."

Kedari said Dutt had already acquired the necessary skills and was working on his unfinished articles.

Yusuf Nulwalla, Dutt's friend and co-convict in the blasts case, was kept in an adjacent room of the barrack, at his request.

Jail officials said some of Dutt's lawyers met him for a brief period. After Dutt's police van arrived around 11.30 pm on Tuesday, he was rushed through the main gate and taken inside to complete formalities.

Security has been beefed up in and around the jail. A moderate posse of policemen outside the prison put barricades on both sides of the road leading to the jail to keep onlookers at bay.
