One person was on Wednesday killed when security forces opened fire on a group of protesters who defied curfew in Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district.
Agitated at the firing, more people gathered in the Handwara area and indulged in stone pelting resulting in the injury to five police
personnel, official sources said.
Trouble started when a group of protesters started raising anti-India slogans after offering afternoon prayers at Banday Mohalla, the sources said.
Security forces opened fire to disperse the mob in which one person identified as Mohammad Yousuf Banday was injured. He was shifted to a hospital here where doctors declared him brought dead.
The situation was tense in Handwara area and security forces apprehend fresh violence in the wake of Banday's death, the sources said.
