Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh tonight said the situation was "grave" in the terror-hit Mumbai and asked the Centre to provide more security forces to deal with the situation. Deshmukh said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress President Sonia Gandhi called him and expressed concern over the attacks.

The Chief Minister strongly condemned the terror strikes and asked people not to believe in rumours.

Deshmukh assured people that his Government will take stringent action against the culprits involved in the attacks.

Police are fighting the terrorists, he said, and asked people to be at home and maintain peace.

Meanwhile, Deshmukh has cut short his Kerala visit and left for Mumbai.
