A Delhi court has dismissed the bail plea of two police constables, who along with five other colleagues had allegedly extorted over Rs 19 lakh from an aide of kidney racket kingpin Amit Kumar and letting him go scot-free. "I am of the view that releasing the accused at this stage might hamper the investigation and there may be some chance of witnesses being threatened since the accused are members of the police force," Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate AK Kuhar said.

Rejecting the bail applications of constables Naresh Kumar and Rakesh Kumar, the court said "the allegations are serious and the investigation is still in progress. Some of the accused are still at large."

Both the constables had surrendered on March 23 before this court after evading arrest for nearly one-and-a-half months in the case. Their senior assistant sub-inspector Ravinder Kumar Singh is already in judicial custody.

The policemen along with ASI Singh had allegedly taken a bribe of Rs 19.85 lakh from Dr Upender, a close aide of Dr Amit, for letting him off after he was questioned in the case.

The court, in its order, also rejected the plea of the constables that they were acting at the command of their superior officer Ramesh Khatri of the Special Staff of Delhi Police.

Their claim that there was no element of extortion in the case also rejected by the court.
