Security has been beefed up across West Bengal on the eve of the Republic Day. Patrolling has been increased at railway stations, shopping malls and other public places, as the state gears up to celebrate the 61st Republic Day. "We have made necessary arrangements. Patrolling has been
strengthened," Bhupinder Singh, director general of police, told IANS.

Security has been beefed up at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport.

Additional police force has been posted at the Metro Railway stations in the city, besides stepped up security at market places, shopping malls and other crowded spots.

Jawed Shamim, the joint commissioner of police, told IANS: "We have made complete arrangement for security. Checking is being carried out at various points and nine watch towers around Maidan area have been erected for a proper vigil."

The north Bengal Inspector-General of Police K.L. Tamta told IANS: "Our police and BSF (Border Security Force) will be doing joint patrolling in the border areas of Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh. We have done nakabandi (sealed the borders) along the borders of Bihar and Assam."

Surprise checking in vulnerable places and picnic spots will be carried out, he said.
