The Cannes red carpet is as revered as its most prestigious award, the Palme d’Or. Celebrities spend months planning their outfits, readying for the big day when their efforts are finally applauded or roundly trashed. We pick out the best of the bunch, and show you how to replicate these couture

Cheryl Cole’s feathered fiesta
There’s no denying the paparazzi went nuts when they spotted Cole’s colour degradé feathered contraption on the runway. But for a more demure take on the eyeball-grabbing trend, opt for a neckpiece or boho-inspired earrings rather than being mistaken for Big Bird’s younger sister.
Freida Pinto’s toned torso
Every year, the erogenous zone of fashion shifts. And 2012 shines a spotlight on the torso. “Even when wearing a sari, this is the same area that gets highlighted,” says stylist Nitasha Gaurav, adding, “Ideally, you should have a toned body to pull this off, though there are tricks that can help those who aren’t blessed.”
Gaurav recommends throwing a jacket on top of the crop top-skirt combo, so that the back and sides are hidden, letting those love handles pass unnoticed. “Another option is wearing a sheer layer on top of it. This kind of layering creates an optical illusion, which is a boon to regular women,” she advises.
Berenice Bejo’s colour-blocking code
The Artist (2011) star Berenice Bejo chose to go a quirkier route and opted for a colour-blocked look in candy shades. Rana says copying this style should not be too difficult and must in fact come naturally to desi fashion followers.
“We’re masters of colour,” he points out. For Indian designers who can offer their own takes on the trend, he advises, “If you’re planning to step out for the evening, then take a look at Shivan & Narresh’s resort saris, not to forget Anupama Dayal’s bold, flowing creations.”
Bond girl’s bold gold
Berenice Marlohe is the new Bond girl steaming up the silver screen opposite Daniel Craig, and she made sure all eyes were on her in this gold lamé flowing gown with lace detailing on the bust.
It’s a slight change from the routine sequinned dresses and walking glitterbombs that dot the film festival, but is just as eye-catching, especially when worn against Miss Marlohe’s resort tan skin. If the head-to-toe look is too bold for you, consider just a maxi pleated skirt worn with a classic white button down shirt for a more tempered effect.
