The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Prime Ministerial candidate Narendra Modi, apart from attacking ‘prince’ Rahul Gandhi and defending Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif’s reported remarks, spent a substantial part of his address in taking a dig at Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
Modi called Sheila the happiest chief minister who had no other job apart from cutting ribbons. “Sometimes I think if there is any happiest chief minister in our country, then it is the Delhi chief minister,” Modi said in his maiden election rally in Delhi on Sunday.
“Right from morning to evening, she has no other work apart from cutting ribbons,” Modi said in his hour-long speech amid cheers from the crowd.
The Gujarat CM mocked at Dikshit for “shirking her responsibility” by managing to find scapegoats — be it the municipal corporations or the Central government — for her “failures”.
“When people complain about potholes she blames the corporations, when they raise the issue of safety she says police is under the Central government. You are a chief minister and you have to be responsible,” said Modi at Japanese Park in Rohini.
Modi targeted the Delhi government for failing to provide uninterrupted power supply in the Capital. He claimed that power disruption took place even during surgeries at hospitals and even the Prime Minister’s residence had to rely on generators. “PM house mai bhi generator use karne hote hai,” he said.
“More than 20,000 power plants across the country, including Delhi, are ready but aren’t producing electricity because they don’t have gas or coal. Do we need an extraordinary vision to ensure these power plans function? No. All we need is a will, which is lacking,” said Modi.
Referring to the December 16 gang rape incident, Modi criticised Dikshit for “doing nothing” to ensure the safety of women in Delhi.
“When innocent girls are raped in Delhi, and incidents like the December 16 gang rape occur, the chief minister says ‘I am a mother and I also get affected’ but suggests that all girls should return home early in the evening. What is your responsibility then? The chief minister of Delhi takes no responsibility. She either blames it on somebody above or below her”.
Attacking the government for the 2010 Commonwealth Games corruption cases, he said: “The corruption related to the Games cannot just be seen in terms of financial irregularities. The Commonwealth Games scam has robbed India of its sportsman spirit,” he said.
He said the entire leadership of Delhi Congress were “addicted to corruption just as an alcoholic is addicted to alcohol”.
The rally was attended by the entire Delhi BJP leadership as the party is banking heavily on the ‘Modi magic’ to wrest power from the Congress.
