From Rahul Gandhi to Narendra Modi, youth is the flavour of election season — both assembly as well as the general elections next year. And all political parties, even those which are associated with heartland politics, are going all out to woo the youth as well as manufacturing their own ‘youth icons’.
Websites, social networking and special manifestos are being used to woo both first-time and young voters. In the Delhi assembly elections, there are 3.54 lakh first-time registered voters, while the estimated number of such voters will be 12 crore in the 2014 general elections.
In Delhi, where polling for assembly elections is scheduled to be held on December 4, the number of first-time voters has almost doubled from the last years’ municipal polls. Political parties are using all means to woo them.
The Delhi BJP has marked the young voters from the list of voters provided by the Delhi election commission. The party is sending special invitation cards to all young voters, asking them to participate in the BJP meetings. These meetings will be organised across all 70 assembly segments.
“We have a number of young volunteers who are spreading the word about the meetings. These will be organised between 25 October and 30 October. We will show them a nine-minute video, showcasing the party’s agenda. Instead of discussing problems, we will talk about solutions to issues which are faced by them. For instance, we will explain to them the formula by which we will reduce power bills in the Capital by 30%,” said Rajiv Babbar, BJP spokesperson.
According to sources, the video has been made by a theatre artist from the National Social of Drama.
Invitation letters have already been sent in a number of constituencies, including Tilak Nagar, RK Puram, and Vishwas Nagar.
The Delhi Congress is also planning to use social media to reach out to the young voters.
“They are an important segment of society and we will incorporate their views in our manifesto too,” said JP Aggarwal, president, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), has also been extensively using social media to woo the young voters. AAP’s leader Arvind Kejriwal has been visiting colleges such as St Stephen’s and IIT Delhi to interact with the youth and encourage them to join the political discourse.
Recently, the Delhi BJP had set up special counters to help students enrol themselves in the voters’ list.
