A day after his mother accused Chhattisgarh government of failing to curb Maoist violence, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday said Raman Singh government is yet to take responsibility for poor law and order situation in the state.

At a rally in Bastar region of the state on Thursday, Sonia Gandhi referred to the Maoist ambush that nearly wiped out state Congress leadership in May this year.  Speaking at a rally in Rajnandgaon, Rahul also invoked the same incident to attack the BJP government.

“It is shameful that frontline Congress leadership was killed in the attack and BJP government does nothing but make big speeches on violence and terrorism,” Rahul said.

Observers believe the Congress is banking on sympathy the killings might have generated in Bastar to boost its prospects in assembly elections scheduled on November 11 and 19. The ruling party is in a strong position in Bastar, which is dominated by tribals, with 11 seats compared to Congress’s one.

“Congress leader Nand Kishore Patel was set to be the chief minister of the state but was killed because he was leader of the common people,” Rahul said, urging people not to forget “their sacrifices”.

Describing Raman Singh government a “world champion in corruption”, Rahul said, “This government took away 6 lakh acres of your land for industries. Suitable compensation was not offered. The land, forest and water belong to you and if these have been snatched, Congress will return them to you.”

"We talk of rights for youth, tribals and women, but BJP wants to take back the rights. Everyone knows what happens to women here. We will take care of women when we come to power," he said.

Later addressing a rally largely attended by tribals in Kanker, Rahul asked the people to ensure the government of Aam Aadmi (common man), which according to him is the Congress, is voted to power.
