The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday announced the first list of 20 candidates who will take on some of the leaders who figured in its “most corrupt list” released last month.

In selecting these candidates the party relied largely on new age determinants such as age, clean background and anti-corruption credentials. The traditional caste factor was also taken into consideration in some cases.

In constituencies where the party was unable to find a prominent personality it opted for former bureaucrats and technocrats with clean records or those with records of social service behind them.

The different criteria for selecting the candidates also gives a glimpse of the kind of people the fledgling party will field in other Lok Sabha constituencies across the country.

It appears that the main plank on which the party will fight the polls will be against corruption and AAP is likely to put up strong, prominent candidates against political heavyweights accused of corruption.

In constituencies where corruption is not a major issue, it will go for ‘clean’ candidates who are either professionals or activists.

Edit: AAP has played by the unwritten rules of caste and community
